Everything You Need To Know About Hemorrhoid Banding

Although quite unpleasant, hemorrhoids are something that quite a few people experience. There are a number of different methods people experiencing this painful complication can pursue to get rid of the problem. One of the many common methods is hemorrhoid banding.

Hemorrhoid banding is a procedure used to remove hemorrhoids. What will be removed are enlarged and bulging blood vessels in the anus and lower rectum. How this procedure works is by cutting off the blood circulation causing the hemorrhoids to shrink and fall off. If needed, more than one hemorrhoid can be treated and removed.

There are several reasons why you may want to pursue this procedure over others. The two main reasons you would undergo this procedure is if there is severe bleeding or you are experiencing a lot of pain.

The other two reasons you may look into this procedure is if the hemorrhoid contains a blood clot or if it is protruding through the anus. However, hemorrhoid banding is not recommended if it is protruding and remains outside of the body.

Prior to the procedure, your doctor is likely to as you several questions. You will be asked to do a physical exam, rectal exam, and a sigmoidoscopy. A sigmoidoscopy is when a specialized endoscope is used to examine the inside of the anus, rectum and lower intestine.

The procedure itself involves the doctor inserting an instrument with a light and lens through the anus. The doctor will then use a special banding tool to place a small rubber band around the hemorrhoid. The band will then cut off the blood flow causing the hemorrhoid to shrink. The band and the hemorrhoid will then fall off in about one to two weeks.

It is a fairly simple procedure and goes by rather quickly depending on how many hemorrhoids are being treated. Although you may experience some discomfort during and after the procedure, it is relatively minor. There is no hospital stay that is required with hemorrhoid banding.

Hemorrhoid banding is a common procedure that people pursue. Because of the ease and convenience, it is a popular method that doctors recommend. If you are experiencing discomfort and notice any of the symptoms that go along with having hemorrhoids, it is vital you get in to see a doctor. Learn more about hemorrhoid banding here!
